The following are some pointers on driving in San Francisco:

  • You must drive on the right side of the road and front seat passengers must wear seat belts.

  • The standard cars here are automatic transmission.

  • The speed limit in the city and other built up areas is 20-35mph.

  • When parking your car downhill turn your wheel towards the curb; parking uphill away from the curb. Therefore if the car rolls down the hill the curb will break it.

  • You must obtain liability insurance if you own a car. Liability insurance provides money to pay for damages that you cause while you are driving, or while someone else drives your car with your permission.

  • Cable cars always have the right of way and so do pedestrians at crossings where there are no traffic lights.

  • You can turn right on a red signal providing you stop and check that no pedestrians or traffic deter this maneuver.

  • The American Automobile Association (AAA) offers assistance to members of all affiliated organizations abroad. In case of breakdown dial 1-800-336 HELP for information on how to obtain emergency assistance.

  • The San Francisco DMV is located at 1377 Fell St., CA 94117. Appointment/Info (415) 557-1179 or you can check out their website at http://www.dmv.ca.gov
